“We expect to see public sector owners and operators become more
sophisticated stewards of their assets.”
Foresight: A global infrastructure perspective KPMG, January 2016

In a 2014 report, the Mowat Centre, a Canadian policy think tank, said Ontario and other Canadian provinces are faced with a significant policy problem. Much of its existing infrastructure is aging, significant new investments are required, and yet governments and the public have resisted raising the taxes necessary to reinvest. The Province of Ontario’s 2015 Auditor General’s Report said ongoing maintenance and renewal activities have typically been underfunded and piecemeal.
Deferring maintenance on infrastructure assets causes other problems. Maintenance costs on aging infrastructure rise as the asset deteriorates. Containing these costs is a major problem.
Containing rising infrastructure costs is one of the many issues the IGNITE Sustainable Communities Program addresses. Membership in the IGNITE Infrastructure Association provides full access to all aspects of the IGNITE Program. Members choose how fast or slow they wish to move forward with the program. As a member-based nonprofit, IGNITE is designed to serve the needs of its members and to ensure all the needed resources are available to assist its members in containing their infrastructure costs the best way possible.
